Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
After a long and eager wait, I was fortunate enough to see this movie on it's opening night; July 11th, 2007. I managed to con a few of my friends into coming to see the later showing at an IMAX theatre, and I was pleasantly surprised to find out that 28 minutes of this film were in 3-D.
So, there I sat, my massive IMAX glasses in hand, waiting for a movie that I expected to be mind blowing.
While I was impressed with the 3-D, I found the flow of the movie to be.. unpleasant. From the start, I felt that the movie was rushed, and felt that key parts of the story were missing:
- Mr. Weasley in the hospital
- Finding Neville in the hospital to visit his ailing parents
- Very little of Ginny
- The bog that Fred and George leave in the hallway for Umbridge
- etc.
I was impressed with the method the director used to get a lot of information across in a short span of time; with the newspapers, but I also felt that it took away from the flow of the story. The suspense wasn't built up, because there were gaps, and time-shifts.
The thing I enjoyed most about OOTP was Luna Lovegood. The casting was great for that part, and Evanna Lynch kept me on my toes, and laughing. Her heartfelt performance made me adore her, yet not pity her misfortunes, as she did not regret them herself.
Over all, the movie was good. It was hyped up to be a lot better than I found it, but I was not entirely disappointed. I recommend that those of you who felt the same as I did attempt watching it again from the comfort of your homes when it is released on DVD. I'm sure it will be better the second time around.
Score: B+
